CLINICAL SUPERVISION

En Español

PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH TO CLINICAL SUPERVISION

We approach supervision as a collaborative framework aimed at fostering the professional growth of supervisees, enhancing their ability to serve clients effectively. Our focus involves assisting supervisees in articulating and refining their professional identity—an exploration and development of their individual therapeutic orientation, style, and professional ethos. This encompasses a broad spectrum, including honing competence in crucial clinical domains: counseling skills, self-awareness, client/case conceptualization, screening and assessment, various counseling modalities, client education, ethical standards, and the cultivation of therapeutic alliances. Our supervisory roles encompass that of a teacher, evaluator, consultant, and counselor.

As clinical supervisors, our aim is to create a secure and supportive environment that fosters your learning, helping you navigate both known and unknown aspects of your practice. We tailor our approach, utilizing a developmental model, employing the teacher role for novice supervisees and consultation for the more experienced. Adaptability is key, recognizing the evolving needs of supervisees over time, ensuring growth while prioritizing client and therapist welfare. Our supervisory approach employs a reflective model, whether conducted individually or in group settings.

The overarching goals of our clinical supervision encompass:

  • Developing competence in mental health assessment and treatment, encouraging ongoing learning and advancement in the field.
  • Gaining a comprehensive understanding of theoretical orientations and their practical application.
  • Fostering clinical proficiency in assessment, treatment planning, implementation, and documentation.
  • Cultivating ethical decision-making within clinical practice.
  • Modeling and encouraging appropriate approaches in addressing cultural, gender, sexual identity, religious affiliations, or other diversity-related issues in counseling settings.
  • Nurturing the counselor's self-awareness, distinguishing personal issues from those of the client to avoid countertransference. While clinical supervision isn't therapy, at times, it may verge on this boundary as we discern which issues merit discussion in supervision versus those best addressed within the supervisee's personal therapy.
  • Supporting supervisees in managing professional performance anxiety while enhancing their professional identity and expertise.
